Live in Atlanta with Marcus Buckingham

Mark Cole said it himself––this is one of our best episodes yet! We’re making John Maxwell Leadership Podcast history this week for two reasons: 1) We recorded this episode in front of a live audience, and 2) John Maxwell and Mark Cole sat down to discuss leadership with Marcus Buckingham!

If you’re not familiar with Marcus Buckingham, he is the author of two of the best-selling business books of all time, has two Harvard Business Review’s most circulated, industry-changing cover articles, and has been the subject of an in-depth profile in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Forbes, Fortune, Fast Company, The Today Show, and The Oprah Winfrey Show. But most of you may know him from his work with Gallup’s StrengthsFinder tool, which has impacted and equipped countless lives and leaders around the world.

In this episode, John and Marcus discuss their definitions of strengths and weaknesses, bust common leadership myths, and Marcus discusses his new book Nine Lies About Work. We say this all the time… “You don’t want to miss this episode.” But, listeners, you really don’t want to miss this episode.

  1. This was really really good! i am also very interested in partnering with you both (John and Marc) on the Strengths finder and leadership for kids/teens/youth. That’s my turf.
What you said about what schools teach hit home for me as I fill that gap and teach teens/youth the skills schools do not teach to help them become wholesome and holistic individuals who would in turn impact and add value to their sphere of influence.

  2. This is so good. It gives me great hope. I left a social gathering last night with a group of people that I identify with. As they gathered together for their group photo, they excitedly invited the lady I was engaged in a conversation with to join in the photo op. She didn’t, but was greatly encouraged by several as friends to do so, while no one encouraged me to join in despite being a part of why the photo was being taken. As I walked out to my car I was approached by an overly friendly soul that drew out a conversation. In that conversation I was prompted to encourage this person in their pain that pain introduces us to ourselves and that when the inside gets bigger, the outside gets better too. It, just like this podcast, reminds me why John Maxwell is so valuable. My uniqueness is valuable and everyone has value. This person looked at me and with tearful expression thanked me and told me I was an influencer and had added value to them. They asked for my JMT card after I explained that I was building a business and would be glad to present a lunch and learn for free to add more value. I don’t know what will come from that encounter, but I am clear about what did come from it as much as this podcast makes so much clear also. I’m going to stop trying to work on my weaknesses and celebrate my uniqueness and find ways to express that in the world. Thank you, again!

    1. Brenda! Thank you for sharing your story! I love what you say here, “My uniqueness is valuable and everyone has value.” Thank you for passing this along.

  3. WOW, this was amazing!
I was just thinking about lies in the workplace and now I’ve got reference.
I’ve also got a grandson needing support, identification and recognition of his talents and a curriculum in the horizon.
GOD is good, thanks for your free education. With gratefulness and love,
    Jocelyne

  4. I love your podcast and got already a lot of great inspiration of it. Thank you 🙂
    But this episode beats everything!!!
I would love to support your activities regarding strength finder for kids.
As a father of three kids and a husband of a teacher I already had a lot of discussions, how we can help our kids to prepare for future.
In Germany we are also facing issues regarding concepts for teaching the right stuff.
Please let me know how I can support or and keep me up to date regarding your activities regarding developing strength finder for kids.
I’m looking forward to share more details provided by you with my community at work and my private network.

  5. I just listened to this podcast, after listening to The Best of John Maxwell…June 29, 2021. I am so excited! I teach in a small, rural PreK-12 district in Nebraska. For 3 years we have been using CliftonStrengths and StrengthsExplorer with our staff and students. A committee of teachers decided this is important for our students, and have moved forward with the blessing of our administration. We feel like we are on an island, trying to figure out how to implement strengths in our district, with little to guide us. I am anxious to see what you have and how we can implement that in our district. Thank you for an awesome podcast!
