The Picture of Leadership (Part 1)

Leaders have the privilege and responsibility to choose the vision of the organization. That’s what John discusses in the first episode of a new, three-part series we’re calling The Picture of Leadership.

Throughout this series, John will dive into the “4 Cs” of leadership and provide a clear picture of what great leadership looks like. This week is all about how leaders choose.

If you’ve ever struggled with finding a clear vision for your organization, or if you have a difficult time leading your team to own that vision, John’s teaching will be especially helpful to you.

According to John, your ability to take the vision from “me to we” defines you as a leader. In this episode, Mark and Richard examine their experiences with this teaching as they’ve led their teams to hold the organization’s vision.

Our BONUS resource for this series is the Picture of Leadership Worksheet, which includes fill-in-the-blank notes from John’s teaching. You can download the worksheet by clicking “Download the Bonus Resource” below.

  1. Help me realize some areas that I’m doing and others that I’m not doing at all. Great tools on how to stay a great leader and how not to lose traction. Looking forward to the rest of the series. On not just what i should look like but on how to and what to look for in choosing my team. Not to just choose team members but team leaders.

  2. Great stuff! I liked what Mark said at the end of the audio about, “Modeling”. Baby, are we walking the talk!?

  3. Wow, it really great and worth it listening. Thank you very much, i will apply it in my group. God bless the work of your hands!

  4. Great eye opening on the idea of The Law of Magnetism, if an organization doesn’t like who they are attracting they may need to look at themselves and see how they need to change in order to attract those who they want to attract.

  5. Thank you for this wonderful inputs on the picture of leadership. This will guide me in performing my responsibility for the benefit of our team and to visualize the profile of a leader that would motivate others to act.

  6. You say that one of the Values of the organization is “PASSION.” Do you have a list of all the Values of your organization?

    1. Hi Matt,

The values of the John Maxwell Company are:
      – People: We are people of value who add value to people
      – Growth: Growth increases capacity
      – Passion: Loving what we do makes us contagious
      – Leadership: Everything rises and falls on leadership
      – Performance: Exceeding expectations sets us apart from others
      – Partnership: One is too small of a number to achieve greatness
      – Transformation: A changed leader changes lives

We hope you continue to enjoy the podcast!

  7. Was a bit confused on one thing and invite clarification. a) We attract people ‘Like Us, be the person we want to attract’ but b) Choose people ‘Different to you’ to compliment your team.

I get we need people who compliment us, who have strengths we dont, but how does that work with ‘we attract people like us?

    Please Clarify.

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Carl! Great question. Our tendency as leaders is to attract people like us. While it’s important to model the style of leadership of those we want on our team, it’s also important to attract people who compliment our strengths and fill in areas that we’re weak in. I hope this helps clarify your question.
